Tools and Helps for Writers

As I come up with them, I'll be putting links to various things that I believe will be of help to writers, whether they are writers of short fiction, novels or whatever.  Maybe the tool you need will be here!

Writers Database 1.2.0 A free database system that enables writers to keep a track of the works they have created, the potential publishers they have identified and any submissions to those publishers. It allows you to quickly and easily see what works are awaiting a submission, which submissions are outstanding, which publishers you have tried etc.
S.A.M.M. Manuscript Tracker Writing is a wonderful, creative, liberating activity. Tracking your submissions is just the opposite. On this page we list some links to free programs you can use to ease the burden.
OpenOffice.org Open Source replacement for Microsoft Office This is an awesome, and FREE, replacement for Microsoft Office.  It will open MS Word docs, Excel docs, PowerPoint docs... and more.  Plus, it creates them just as well, and will save anything you create in it as a PDF.  Great, great software.
American Psychological Association (APA) Style Crib Sheet If you are writing an article that requires APA style, this is a GREAT help that condenses the APA style guide very handily.  FREE.
Chicago Manual of Style Writer's Guide (electronic) A FREE electronic version of the Chicago Manual of Style, which also covers the Turabian style guide.
The Elements of Style (Strunk and White) The original book that should be "the daily companion of anyone who writes for a living and, for that matter, anyone who writes at all."  FREE download of the e-version.
Nvu Web Authoring System Need to build that awesome web site to sell your new book or promote your stories, but don't have the money for FrontPage? Here's a great, FREE, open-source web authoring system with versions for Windows, Mac and Linux.
yWriter 2 This is a text editor for writing.  Why a text editor?  Well, not only can you write your story in it, but it has facilities for listing characters and the scenes they appear in, it does word counts, etc.  And it's small (read that as it works even on an older PC or one with minimal memory), and FREE.  No "nag screens" either.
Sonar This is a manuscript submission tracking program.  I haven't needed it, but I'm sure there are a lot of writers who submit many more manuscripts than I do.  Again, it's FREE.
WriteThis2 This is a neat tool for creating random story scenarios.  You can use it as intended, with the writing timer, or you can use it to generate a variety of writing exercises for a class or just for personal growth.  It's FREE.
RoughDraft This is a freeware word processor made precisely for creating literary works.  It can be used to write letters, of course, but it has special modes for screenplays, stage plays and prose.  It has some very cool features, and of course it's FREE.
AnyMiniW This is a word counting software tool.  It counts the words in a variety of document types, including .TXT, .DOC, etc.  SHAREWARE.
Writer's Calendar for Periodical Submittals From an idea on A Zillion Newspapers (now defunct), this is a calendar for those writing for periodicals, that lets you know the approximate lead time for submittals.
